Private sellers

Verifying your identity

The one-off licence or passport check and selfie every seller completes before a listing is reviewed.

Every private seller verifies their identity once, before their first listing is submitted for review. It keeps scammers off Cars61, and buyers see a Verified badge on your listings once you are approved.

You can create and save drafts before you verify. The check is only needed when you select Submit for review.

Step 1 of 3 of identity verification: choosing driver licence or passport
Step 1 of 3: choose the document you will use.

What you need

  • An Australian driver licence (front and back) or a passport (photo page).
  • A device with a camera. A phone works best.
  • A few minutes somewhere with good light.
  1. Choose your document

Go to /user/verify-identity (or select Verify now on your Profile). Choose Driver licence or Passport. For a licence, also choose the state that issued it and enter the licence number.

  2. Photograph the document

The camera guide checks that all four edges are in view and that the document fills the frame. If your camera does not work on this device, use Continue on your phone and scan the QR code.

  3. Take the selfie check

You are asked to do three quick actions, such as blink, turn your head or smile. This shows it is really you in front of the camera. Tick the consent box and select Submit for review.

  4. Wait for the result

A Cars61 moderator checks every verification by hand. Most are decided within one business day, and the result arrives in your notifications. If it is not approved, you will see the reason and a Try again button.
