Selling safely
Inspections, test drives and taking payment without getting caught out.
Most buyers are genuine. These habits protect you from the few who are not.
Arranging an inspection
- Meet in a public place, or at home with someone else there.
- Check the buyer’s driver licence before a test drive, and never let them drive alone.
Taking payment
- Wait until the money has cleared in your account before you hand over the car, keys and papers.
- Transfer receipts, screenshots and bank cheques can be faked. Check your own bank account.
- Never pay a buyer’s “shipping”, “agent” or “inspection” fee.
Your details
- Keep your phone number and address out of your description; use Cars61 messages until you are ready to meet.
- Blur your number plate in photos. Your plate and VIN are never shown on your listing.
